Patrice Mousseau – Truth, Compassion and Intuition
Patrice Mousseau | 2017 Recipient of the Startup Canada Indigenous Entrepreneur Award
“TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. NO EXPERT KNOWS YOUR BUSINESS AS WELL AS YOU DO.”
Patrice Mousseau, an Ojibway entrepreneur from Fort William First Nation, Ontario, now living in Vancouver, developed her company, Satya Organic Skin Care, out of the need to treat her baby daughter’s eczema.
Patrice refused to treat her daughter’s condition with steroid cortisone creams and turned to traditional medicine and academic studies to create a treatment in a crock-pot in her kitchen.
Transitioning from a home remedy to a flourishing company, Satya Organic Skin Care is now available in over 600 stores across Canada.
SN: What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
PM: My daughter had eczema and there were no other products on the market that were natural and effective. Also, I saw the need for more women entrepreneurs to lead by example and do business with compassion and integrity.
SN: What is the biggest lesson you have learned to date?
PM: Sometimes going for a walk is the best way to spend your time.
SN: What advice do you have to those starting up today?
PM: Be sure to trust your instincts. No expert knows your business as well as you do.
SN: What do we need to do as a nation, today, to position Canada as a global innovation and entrepreneurial leader?
PM: We need to make funding available to all sectors in innovative ways. The old system only works for a few, and minorities and women are sorely underfunded.
SN: What is your vision for the next 150 years?
PM: We change our cultural identity to one of ‘Truth and Compassion’.
SN: What is your message to the world?
PM: Be kind to yourself.
SN: How have you benefited from being a recipient of the Startup Canada Awards?
PM: National recognition of my product and validation of my business model.
